    A doctor suggested smoking to walt disney, supposedly to calm his nerves. 1920s medicine…
    .
    Relatives tell me that back in the 40s cigarettes were commonly referred to as “coffin nails”. People knew back then.

    A doctor suggested smoking to a friend of mine less than a decade ago, for a colon disease. As for knowing about it, they knew a lot further back than that. The first recorded mention I know of is a Doctor’s Journal from the 1600’s. In the 30 years before Tobacco was brought to England he had seen 2 cases of cancer. In the decade after it became common he saw dozens. That wasn’t proof of course, but the pattern was obvious even then.
