I avoid elevators, I try to take the stairs. Elevators run on electricity, which can fail. Almost all of them run on 3 phase, if only one phase goes dead you’re stuck.

But how many people have fallen down an elevator and broken their neck, as opposed to stairs?

I, too, avoid elevators, though not from fear of being stuck. I simply can’t stand to just stand around in that tiny room. I much prefer keeping moving and taking the stairs. As a side benefit, the stairs provide a li’l bit o’ exercise and avoid unnecessary electricity use. But really it’s about the aversion to standing around, particularly since you usually have to stand around with a bunch of complete strangers who are trying to avoid making eye contact with anybody else or acknowledging that the other people exist.

Just last week I was on the elevator at the US Mint building in New Orleans. Great exhibit of 50 years of the Preservation Hall Band and Louis Armstrong’s coronet. You should go already. I was nearly all by myself throughout the museum.

When it stopped at the ground floor the doors didn’t open. Oh oh, I thought. I had to press the open door button on the console in order to open the door.

Whew, my nightmares of elevators were banished at that
    point. This time.

    Next time I am walking.
