Alice is really good at that! Notice how she made sure to work in Daddy, instinctively knowing that Daddy would get Madeline’s attention. And then she ties it in with the “funny” connection. Brilliant!

The funny thing is, Alice doesn’t even realise she’s been criticised. She doesn’t comprehend why her actions not being nice, cute or funny has significance. Instead it just makes her think of something that was funny.

When my mother was giving her first grandchild a talking-to about some misbehavior, my daughter said, “Look, Grandma! What a beautisul sunset!”

Like most kids, her thoughts just bang around in her head like bats in a belfry until they escape through her mouth…

Huh, I thought it was down jackets that did it. When we were young, my sister would put on my dad’s down jacket and pretend to be ET, the Extra-Terrestrial. The jacket was puffy, light brown and came down to her ankles, so it wasn’t much of a stretch of the imagination. I think I will have to remind her about that.

Now, what were we talking about again?
