    What’s happening in the final panel is considered normal to Petey?

    Petey isn’t especially talkative today. He has 2 words for everything!

    Alice and Dill’s adventures seem normal to Petey when compared with the oddities of Ernesto.
    It all seems… wonderful …to me.

    Petey thinks he’s the one experiencing a potent hallucinogen. I remember those. Two hours of fun followed by 12 hours of “wish this would stop so I can get some sleep.”

    Notice “normality” rather than “normalcy”.

    Yes, I was glad to see that. President Warren G. Harding used “normalcy” because he didn’t know any better. Then it seemed to become the “norm” for the general populace. Ug.

    In a word——yes. Normality for him.

    I prefer normality. Normalcy was more of a quirk.

    How do you feel about “like” as a subordinating conjunction? As in “Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.” I’m showing my age.

    @lonecat, the 1960’s weren’t that long ago!

    As they say, the devil you know… What one regards as ‘normality’ is highly subjective. I would say that we’re dealing with degrees of weirdness here, but to Petey, Alice’s antics are at least familiar and reassuring compared to Ernesto’s musings.
