“Many people in the CIA are so patriotic, they protect our country in a way to avoid conflict and violence,” she said, adding the agency’s “attitude” came from Cheney. “I think he’s proud of it.”

I remember stopping at sidewalk cracks and trying to figure out why they were there when I was a little kid. They seemed so primordial, shrouded in prehistory. And those kinds of discussions went on about so many things adults would consider trivial! How amazing that Thompson could capture these moments and goad into life memories long dormant.

One of the natural wonders of New Hampshire was The Old Man of the Mountain, a rock formation on a cliff face that, in profile, looked like a craggy old guy. They were so proud of it they chose it as the symbol for the NH state quarter. Then, a couple of years later, it fell off.

Like Deltorie, he has tapped into the reservoir of ancient feelings and thinking processes of a child.
