    I just learned that Mercury doesn’t quite revolve and rotate at the same rate. But its dark side is still cold enough for water ice.

    Based on what I read in the last few days, the Mercurial ice is at the poles. Mercury doesn’t really have a dark side. FWIW, it’s also inaccurate to speak of the moon having a dark side, as the side we can’t see gets as much sun as the side we can see, depending upon where it is in its orbit. After all, when they had that total eclipse over Australia last month, the “dark side” of the moon was facing the sun, while the side we see was in the dark.

    Yes, there are craters at Mercury’s poles that never receive any sunlight. Add in the fact that Mercury has virtually no atmosphere left to hold in heat, and you get one of the coldest spots in the whole of the solar system. Neat, huh?
