Professional crime profiling is not discouraged. Racial profiling – which is profoundly different – is discouraged.

Are we sure the TV isn’t describing a dog or a cat? Some of them are pretty vicious.

It’s right and noble to judge people not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their characters — but that means having the time to get to know them. If you have to make a five-second snap judgement about whether you trust someone’s intentions — we all do that, usually unconsciously, on a regular basis, and if you’re in law enforcement you literally live or die by it — you’re up against a couple of million years of evolutionary biology. Our brains are hard-wired to make just those kinds of snap judgments..Think about it: you’re a hunter-gatherer on the African veldt, you walk around a tree, and you’re suddenly in the presence of an animal. Do you try to catch it and eat it, or do you run from it? Think fast! Same with a strange hominid — just like you, but an unknown individual..Survival favored those who could glance at the clues and make a snap judgement, maybe based on experience, or stories from others in your tribe, or just a “vibe”. And that’s the brain we’re still stuck with, almost completely unchanged, trying somehow to get along with each other in a crowded, complicated, increasing cosmopolitan society..You can moralize about this all you like, but you have to start with the reality of who and what you are.

So… The very important point that was made in today’s strip elicits no comments at all? Anybody who would abuse an animal is scum and should be dealt with harshly. If you’re the type of lowlife who doesn’t care enough about animal abuse to think that it merits strong punishment, then you should at least care about the studies that have indeed shown that animal abusers are more likely to commit crimes against humanity as well. No one cares about this? You’d rather just go on some tangent about racial profiling?

It isn’t the serial killers fault don’t you know, It’s society, he was raised in an abusive family atmosphere, he was picked on in school, he had trouble with women, a bad job, was outcast in his community, nobody loved him. Don’t you understand it isn’t the criminals fault they are scumbags, it is ours. We must accept and take blame for all of society’e woes. After all, we are our brother’s keeper, we have a responsibility to sacrifice ourselves for the good of the less fortunate. How dare we be successful while our brother fails. That is counter to todays culture to which all I have to say is WHO IS JOHN GALT?
