I love the little factoid! Does this mean we’re going to get one every day Alix is at science camp? WOOHOO!

I like this teacher; she shares Alix’s vivid imagination. I also like the little factoid!

The mark of a cool teacher is one thats shares in with the imagination of their students.

There’s teachers, and then there’s people that stand at the front of a room and bore you to death.

Most teachers for Alix’s age share the imagination somewhere in Middle School it starts to get lost. There are few that sneek into the upper levels but they are few and treasures. (What is funny is when they happen to be the Math or Science teacher that is strict and few students note the imagination quality as the teacher trys to “teach you to death”.

I was lucky, and had a math teacher in middle school who taught us poker. Come to think of it, I’m not sure how it related to math… probability, maybe? Either way, it was useful and I will always remember good ol’ Mr. Hilton.

My high school English/Literature teacher was unique and amazing. She was English, and began 9th grade by coming in, slipping on a (imaginary) banana peel and falling on her behind. She then led a discussion on why it’s funny when someone in authority falls and why it’s not when a ‘normal’ person falls. She was my teacher all 4 years of high school (a small American school in Barcelona). She challenged students to read – started them out with comic books if they wouldn’t read anything else, and by the time they graduated, they were reading the classics and understanding them. All her students loved Mrs. B.

Back in the Dark Ages (1962-65) when they still taught history, our teacher would pick a charactor from the era we were woking on and appear in costume and charactor. He would give the lesson in first person as if it were happeneing at the moment. It was fasinating., and eventually lead me to a Masters in history. That style is long gone. Such a shame.

My favorite Engish teacher was Mr. McLain. He’d let fly with a subtle funny and look for my reaction. He also taught us, “De gustibus non est disputandum – ‘Every man to his own taste,’ said the old lady as she kissed the cow.”

It’s also pretty coincidental that Eliot should start in about barnacles in her strip. She’s an Oregonian, writing this from Oregon, and in the last month, a dock floated onto Agate Beach in Newport, covered in barnacles and other indigenous sea-life. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/07/agate-beach-oregon-dock-japan-tsunami_n_1577095.html

This is great! We have summer science camps here on campus. For one section I set up a “tide pool tank” just like this one and let the kiddies play with the creatures.

And not even Alix has just realized she’s not as smart as she was worried about being. She has started learning and doesn’t realize it. Meanwhile, that teacher is proving her worth already. GO, science camp!
