Luckily I don’t have Amish relatives to visit (my great-grandfather was Amish and I’m told by other non-Amish cousins that some still-Amish relatives know his name).

Why is Elizabeth not in an approved car seat — Michael too for that matter. This is in Canada, right?

Wow! A working vacation! They’ll need another vacation to rest from that vacation!

A vacation is a change of activity usually spent away from home. I think this fits the definition.

Too true. I grew up on a dairy farm. No rest for the wicked.

John enjoys his train sets for a hobby, so driving a tractor on the farm is a real vacation for him.

My mom grew up on a farm and always threatened to send my sister and I to a farm for the summer. I almost wish she had, it seems like a great experience.

It would be in later years that John would acquire his hobby of model trains. However it is evident that he seems to consider driving a tractor to be a positive experience. Elly does not seem to be herself unless she is worried or bitching about something. The kids will probably learn the value of a hard day’s work to some degree.

@gmartin997:That’s why I laugh at these city-slickers who complain when a neighbor’s dog poops in their yard. It’s not so much the poop as it is disrespectful. I don’t let my dog wander the neighborhood and poop in other people’s yards, it’s disrespectful. I don’t want to have to pick up someone else’s dog poop…And no I never walked in a cow paddy or otherwise(barefoot) ’cuz I never walked around barefoot!

This strip is 20 yrs old, so the equipment was still low tech. modern farm machinery is high tech and pretty much runs itself. robot farming. one NPR comintator recently talked about a conversation with her father who has a large farm in Canada. She told him she would like to work on the farm this summer, only to be told she was not qualified to operate the equipment any more

How can you say that Elly likes to gripe all of the time. It has been several days [not counting Sunday] since she has said anything. Besides, if I remember correctly, she does drive the tractor for awhile.

Every summer we used to visit our great grandparents farm in southern Indiana. No running water so used to brush teeth out by the fence full of morning glorys. Also there were fireflys and katydids to play with. But most fun was rolling the Civil war era cannonball with a handle welded to it across the front porch and driving Granddaddy crazy. Loved that old doorstop.

This farm vacation strip reminds me of John Denver’s hit song of ‘75: Thank God I’m A Country Boy.

I’ve always wanted to drive a tractor. Have to settle for lawnmowing. My ILs have a farm but sub out the land. I’m sure my romantic notions would go out the window, but it would be cool to think you were accomplishing something real. And totally different from his day job. Elly should get to try it, because it’s also way different from watching kids- though from my experience, the men get to drive tractors but the women on the farms I’ve seen were still watching the kids inside.

Not sure why Elly comes into this. She is just sitting in the car. Michael is the one who says it was supposed to be a vacation.
