I tend to think it is more than just the money – though not love either. I’m not sure what’s going on in Lila’s head, and I don’t think she is, either.
I’ll toss in a note with some positive outlook: If Lila and Annie can be financially secure, and Matthew and Lila (and Annie) get along, maybe they can grow to love each other and be content. I’ll hope for the best. But I suppose the story line would lose punch if that happened. Ha.
Marrying for money is a perfectly reasonable and traditional reason to marry. Consider the divorce rate for people marrying for love and perhaps marrying for money really is a better idea.
