He’s Rip Van Winkle, who supposedly slept for twenty years after drinking some liquor he got from the ghosts of Henry Hudson and his crew. So I guess the joke here is that he is trying as hard as he can to keep from sleeping.
He might get the ability to sleep 20 years, or to stay awake 20 years. And he won’t know until he tries.
