Val: I'm sorry, Alix...you won't be going down in a SUBMARINE at science camp. Alix: Why NOT? Val: Well FIRST of all, there's no OCEAN at science camp. Alix: And SECOND of all...? Val: I think the "first of all" pretty much covers it. Alix: I was promised a SUBMARINE!

Take her to a hobby shop, show her the model kit section. She’ll get the idea.

How about a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago?

I’m sure that Val can find somewhere close (ie, affordable) to visit that would satisfy Alix. Building a minisub should be a good start.

Isn’t this written by a woman in Oregon? They COULD go to OMSI (Oregon Museum Science and Industry) and tour the sub that Hunt For The Red October used.

And Alix will be getting a submarine, she just has to build it.

Never believe an older sibling. Especially when it sounds too good to be true.

I wonder where she actually got that idea?!

Alix, when are you going to learn that promises are not true promises when they come from an older sibling??

The story takes place in Eugene, Oregon. The mom needs to take the day and head to Portland, and take Alex to OMSI. There’s a submarine there. ;)

I went down in the Atlantis submarine when our cruise ship stopped at Grand Cayman. It was indeed an awesome experience!

Baltimore’s inner harbor has a submarine, USS Torsk. Fired the last two torpedoes and sank the last two Japanese combat ships of WWII.

I love the Inner Harbor!

Someone with her active imagination (seeing deep sea ceatures in that kiddie pool) does not need a real submarine (tho’ I’m sure it would be a treat).
