golf and augusta are horrible. golf is biggest waste of time, just behind baseball. and, augusta is like south africa during apartheid. the joke in the office was that the masters really was for the master race.

The pro “circuit” has long required “political connections” to get on the tour, not skill. That these guys are portrayed as “primitives”, still gives them undo credit.

Political connections will not enable you to drive the little white ball 300+ yards, sting a three iron 240 yards, loft a nine-iron 160 yards to ten feet of the pin, and two putt from 60 feet on a rolling lightning fast green. Money will not buy you onto the tour. .Augusta is where men play a civilized game on a pristine playing field, requiring only that you have a high level of skill, integrity, and decorum. Watching or playing, there are worse past times.

Gypsy: a friend was a pro for years, couldn’t get the “pull” to get on the tour, came close a couple times. I liked playing golf, couldn’t stand watching it. (2 handicap)

    Ongaurd and Irish Eddie.

Nothing like adding a hominem or two to the argument, eh guys?

    Here’s what’s going on:

Traditionally, the Augusta Country Club does not admit female members

And Traditionaly the CEO of whichever company sponsors the Masters tourney gets an automatic club membership.

This year, the Masters is sponsored by IBM

The CEO of IBM is woman.

So guess which one of its long standing tradtions the Augusta Country Club chose to honor?

    Thus, this cartoon

The members of the country club where the Masters is played will not allow women to join. Women reporters have been barred from the men’s locker room. Since it is a private club, they should be allowed their own rules. If they use taxpayer money (which I don’t think they do) that changes things. The other 40 or so tournaments don’t have such rules.

The constitutional right of free association for private organizations allows women to have their “no men” groups and men to have their “no women” groups. what would Spanky and the boys have done if somebody forced them to let girls into the clubhouse??

You can always spot the Glenn Beck aficionados, what they lack in factual argument, they make up for in angst and sarcasm,

Both Obama and Romney have opined that Augusta should be open to women. Both men are too smart to take it any further, any more than they would push for gender equality in the Girl Scouts, women’s sororities, or some all-female golf clubs. .Women’s groups, most notably Martha Burk, head of a national women’s group in 2002, have been unsuccessful in pressuring change at Augusta..Augusta will eventually admit female members, same as happened for Jews and blacks – it took too long, but it happened. The change could very well be sooner than later, and when it happens it will be without fanfare and with the endorsement of the members. The club will soon have to decide on an invitation to Virginia Rometty, female CEO of major sponsor IBM. Of course the other thing is whether Rometty wishes to become a member of a stuffy old boy’s club..In other words, oh ScepticCal one, it will be a club board decision, not a political decision or due to political pressure.
