Wait, isn’t Jerry Lawler the guy who famously played along with Andy Kaufman’s wrestling schtick?

And Jerry is an artist. He drew this cover to celebrate the launch of Titan Publishing’s WWE Heroes comic series.

Mike Curtis has asked me to make the following announcement.“Mike says there’s a special late Valentine’s surprise on Feb 16.”Hmm… I wonder what it will be?

It makes sense that Jerry would be the expert. Both Mike and Jerry are Tennessee boys, and Jerry’s artistic talent does make Junior the logical link between the world of Tracy and Lawler… err… King. It’s about 2 am right now, and I can’t wait for tomorrow!

“Jerry King” is obviously based on Jerry “The King” Lawler, whose note as a wrestler and commentator does not exhaust his list of endeavors and accomplishments. But this has already been noted here; here is Jerry Lawler’s WWE page. BTW, in Tarry Plaguer’s magazine cover link, the two wrestlers are Triple H (standing) and The Undertaker (on one knee).

I wonder if this arc will have Tracy going undercover as a wrestler…

Tracy can’t go undercover any more. His picture is in the paper too often. Unless he goes masked, like a Mexican wrestler…

I don’t think we’d see Tracy go under cover as a wrestler. He’s not a young man anymore, after all he’s a grandfather. He’s in great shape — even though we never see him hit the gym. The benefits of being a comic strip hero.

I’m not a wrestling fan, but I’m really enjoying the way Mike keeps bringing pop culture into the strip. The Abner Kadaver storyline was a great look at the almost lost art of horror movie TV hosts, and I’m looking forward to Jerry King’s peek at the world of pro wrestling.

I’ve been a wrestling fan since the ‘50s. I know it’s mostly fake but I just tune out the rhetoric and watch those gorgeous manly bodies strut and fly in and out of the ring.

I remember once in the 50’s, Dick Tracy met a “lady wrestler” as part of the T.V. Wiggles story arc. Wiggles had a past history with her, and tried to use her for hiding out from the law. He actually shot her while she was performing in the arena, and for one terrible moment, fans thought Dick himself had shot her, because when he heard the gunfire, he naturally pulled his own gun.

Matt,.Re your comment below:.“I’m sad to say that this particular storyline has lost all of my interest. I have ZERO interest in wrestling and honestly don’t find the characters interesting at all.”.Did you have the same reaction to the TV WIGGLES storyline, in which the titular villain was a former pro wrestler, and a good chunk of the story involved pro wrestling (including a murder during a pro bout)?.And are you saying you find the character in this story uninteresting? Or are you saying that the characters created by the performers in pro wrestling are uninteresting?.I’m not a pro wrestling fan, either. But one of my favorite SUPERMAN episodes was “No Holds Barred.”.And Wayne Dunde’s THE BRUTAL BALLET was a damned fine private eye novel, notwithstanding its being set in the world of pro wrestling..Why not see how the story plays out before making a judgment?

@ElGuapo:Is that what they were referencing in the current Phantom story-line, which you can see on www.chron.com/comics? Now he is in China, but the first part of the story took place in Mexico, and featured masked wrestlers who were extremely popular with the public, but who were also involved with Mob activity. I wondered where that was coming from.

It seems like there’s always someone grousing about a new story as it gets started. Within a couple days, no one’s complaining and most are raving. Give it some time. This new team hasn’t let us down yet.
