I still don’t understand why the band was let go at the Canadian Border when drugs were found. First, they would be arrested and then released on Bond. But since they were from another country, they would be considered a flight risk.

This team has done great work but I question them on this part of the story.

As I said in my remarks yestereday what happened to me in 1975 at a U.S. port of entry when U.S. Customs Agents stated they found two marijuana seeds in our vehicle.

Marijuana was taken more seriously in those days.

They stripped searched the three of us, who are all males. We were 21 to 22 years of age. The vehicle was brand new. The owner the vehicle had it for only 3 days.

When doing paperwork after the strip search, when they found out I was working for the news department of a radio station in the area, the U.S. Customs agents suddenly asked us to leave.

I wish they had asked us those question before the search.

Later, I found out that same situation happened to other people in the area.

    Good Morning Vista Bill!!!!

    Happy New Year to you!!

    How times have changed.

I remember during the Locher Years that we would have had about 10 to 15 comments by the time of the morning. It is 1:37 central time.

Safeway, during the Locher years Tracy would be hiding behind some scenery by now, blubbering about how he was gonna be killed. That’s what the rest of us would be commenting on. Right now the only issue is how the band members managed to get released when drugs were found in their equipment. That wants some ‘splainin’.

I think the major commenters are taking the morning off. Judging from yesterday’s comments, they were up pretty late.

I mighta missed something……. did the American Customs agents find the drugs, or the Canadians? I don’t know UK’s tolerance level.

On another familiar note, good to see ya, Sydney! If we can find Ludwig and Sparkydog77, we can sing “Kumbayah!” Can’t mention the coloring, though! I don’t want to get a tongue-lashing from a professional publisher!

One thing about Canada that is forgotten is how the Canadian Embassy smuggled American Diplomats out of Iran.

The “Canadian Caper” was the popular name given to the covert rescue by the Government of Canada of six American diplomats who evaded capture during the seizure of the United States embassy in Tehran, Iran and taking of embassy personnel as hostages by the Iranians on November 4, 1979

I have something I was wondering about. When I was looking for the police hat photo I posted a few days ago, I started wondering. What is Dick Tracy’s rank in the department? Is Lizz at a higher rank than Tracy? Looking at the police ranking system used in the US I figured Tracy might be a Sergeant or even a Lieutenant. What do you all think? Has Tracy ever been promoted above Detective rank? What rank do you think Lizz has If she was formerly the Chief of Police before Patton? Is she the Deputy Chief? What do you all think?

Tarry,.Re your questions below:.“What is Dick Tracy’s rank in the department?”.Tracy’s Chief of Detectives. He also personally runs the Major Crimes Unit as a means of staying involved in hands-on police work..“Is Lizz at a higher rank than Tracy?”.Absolutely not! And, as far as I’m concerned, she never has been..“What rank do you think Lizz has If she was formerly the Chief of Police before Patton?”.She was a detective, one grade above patrol officer, before than benighted promotion took place. That’s what made it so ridiculous. Chicago PD has something like 13,000 to 14,000 sworn officers. Between Tracy, as Chief of Detetcives (one star), and Pat (four stars), there would have been an Assistant Superindent for Investigative Services (two stars), a deputy superintendent of Operations (three silver stars), and a First Deputy Superintendent (three gold stars). That’s to say nothing of all the Deputy Chiefs, Commanders, Captains, Lieutenants, and Sergeants. Yet comparative rookie Lizz was promoted above all of them..And there wasn’t even a search. Pat left. Lizz was immediately promoted. There was no sense that any other candidates were considered, or even allowed to apply. .It just doesn’t happen that way..I’m not going to say that a simple detective has NEVER been made chief of a metropolitan department. Tom Cahill was only a homicide detective, with a permanent civil service rank of patrolman, when he got jumped to Deputy Chief, and then, a few months later, Chief of the San Francisco Police. But that was an unusual situation that didn’t apply in this case. And SFPD was a much smaller department than CPD..“Is she the Deputy Chief? What do you all think?”.No she is a detective. And she is subordinate to Tracy.

As much as I might disagree with Mr. Hansel on many, many, many issues, he is absolutely right here. The strips are meant to be shown in black and white and to do otherwise is a disservice to Mr. Staton’s incredible artwork. In my favorites are several Tracy strips from the past year that were absolutely gorgeous in their original black and white format and I am glad that there are still some sites out there that will show Tracy as it is intended. Now, more often than not, I will read the strips there but turn to here because I enjoy the conversation, and I appreciate that many of you do prefer color for whatever reason to black and white, but even you must admit that the GoComics colorist is terrible. There are other sites which colorize as well, yet did not make Jim Trailer look like the Joker during the manhunt for Morning Gloria, for example. Or that insist on a palate of colors that includes brown, darker brown, lighter brown, brownish-white, and brown some more.

Now, as far as overlapping stories go, I don’t like them myself.

I love them. Feeling that this makes the stories more convoluted or complicated shows a complete lack of understanding of storytelling techniques and a willful ignorance of the wonderful history of Gould’s creation, which features such blending in several stories. One famous example would be the Mole, which begins with Steve’s release from jail and the antics of Duke and Sugar before taking a hard left turn into the Mole hotel. Another, a precursor if you would to the Mr. Crime segues, would be Shaky’s money. You know the money that kickstarts the Breathless Mahoney case, winds around the introduction of B.O. Plenty, and pulls in Itchy Oliver. And of course, Itchy, which starts with the threads introduced by Breathless Mahoney, ends with the alliance of Itchy and Kitty B.B. Eyes. The team has done a fantastic job with such elements in the past, and I can’t wait to see how this merges back up with Putty Puss. They have my attention and my interest.

    Aaron
