A bit late starting—27 December 2011 will be, if I’ve counted correctly, the eighth day of Hanukkah. Owing to a U. of Chicago connection, I must ask: hamantash or latke? Cf. Latke-Hamantash Debate

Ask me about latkes in early March 2012 and I’ll respond “feh.” Ask me today and I’ll say “you got some apple sauce to go with?” It’s all about the timing. [I love the Chicago debates.]

Now, about the theme. While I appreciate that we’re seeing something about a Jewish family, Hanukkah is not a major holiday, it’s the commemoration of a historic event to which customs and traditions have been added. If we’ll see Sam turn down something leavened during Passover, if we’ll see him not be at work on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur, then we’ll be seeing something. Right now, all I’m seeing is a fairly typical misunderstanding of a minor festival.

You forget, the most ancient and primitive of all superstitions is the belief that one knows enough to label the beliefs of others as " ancient and primitive superstitions." Alas, that superstition seems to afflict people regardless of their religious beliefs…

Why isn’t Tracy wearing a yellow Yarmulke?

In fact, Tracy does not appear to be wearing a Yarmulke at all!

You’ve posted in the past that you are a Detective … right? So detect! It should be obvious to you that Mike and Joe are trying to flesh our Sam’s character by depicting his family and beliefs. After seeing and reading todays strip we have learned a lot about ALL the cast.

@psamI would disagree. Many strips give us the Christian point of view of the holiday season. Why in this strip it is even established that Tracy celebrates a traditional Christmas.I myself am a pagan and I have not problem with (and in fact enjoy) seeing other religious viewpoints in stories.Besides, this means that Sam can celebrate with Colossal Boy, ShadowCat and the Thing for the holidays.

@Mike Curtis Thanks for your response. I do appreciate that – I’m just annoyed at the rest of the world today. :-( Please continue to flesh out the lives of the characters in any way that enhances the strip. All of us who endured the previous version are ecstatic to have you in charge.

Sam & Dick take a break from fighting crime for some quality time with family & friends. Now that is cool.

The use of actual people (particularly those from this board) is cleverly done. It is a special treat for those “in the know” but yet doesn’t detract from the story for those who are not. Thanks to Mike for bringing us a little extra bit of fun with these guest appearances.

On this day 24 years ago Tracy, Sam, Lizz, and Lee Ebony had just discovered that Dr. Will Carver was the plastic surgeon who screwed up Putty Puss’ face with an experimental technique. Dr. Carver had been in the strip before as the plastic surgeon who gave Mumbles a new face and the same with Haf N Haf. Dr. Carver was eventually killed by Angeltop which angered Putty Puss who wanted to kill Carver himself.

I dig this strip a lot, have since I was a kid. While I understand the “fleshing out” of certain characters is something needed I’d almost rather not see it done if it means stuff like today’s posts about religion. Let’s just catch the bad guys.
