I imagine the pain for the veterans of Pearl Harbor is as fresh as it was 70 years ago. Thanks for remembering.

I once walked into a parking lot of a hotel that was hosting a convention of the 82nd Airborne Division Association. I ended up chatting with their president when I noticed his car had a license plate for the New Jersey Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. I wondered how that could happen.

He explained he was in the Navy and was so badly wounded at Pearl Harbor that they discharged him, saying he’d never walk again. When he recovered, he tried to re-join but they refused him, so he lied about his prior service and enlisted in the Army, ending up in the Airborne. This man was at Pearl Harbor and (I assume) Normandy! Talk to these guys while you still can! (I wish I had gotten his name.)

I also once met a man who said he was a Pearl Harbor survivor, but he was obviously too young. Turned out he was seven and still remembered seeing the Japanese planes flying low over his Sunday school. I wish I had also gotten the story of how he got from Hawaii to Pennsylvania.

That was one of the better Flo & Friends I’ve seen in a long time. Just 3 panels, but puts what happened 70 years ago into full perspective.I read today that the youngest Pearl Harbor survivors are now 88 years old.
