Val: I say we have -
Chef salad on Monday, chicken salad on Tuesday, taco salad on Wednesday, quiche with salad on Thursday...and tuna salad on Friday!
Val: How does that sound??
Holly: Like death by salad.
Alix: That can HAPPEN?!
Whew! In my family a significant number of us are allergic to tomatoes and preserved meats such as ham, and those that aren’t can’t keep tuna down. Looks like Val would be out of luck at my house.
The descriptive word salad doesn’t mean a thing in regards to application of heat, spices, or presentation, EXCEPT that there will most likely be leafy greens in it. Good way to cut costs and to get in some veggies!
When I was young (in the 40s) my grandmas used to have us to Sunday dinners and Holidays and my mother (youngest of 3 girls in her family) never learned to cook. There were no cooking classes in the K-8 school and I had taught myself before HS, so took no “Home Ec” (I took drafting and designed my first house instead). I cooked for my parents and brother from the time I was about 14 until I went away to college, and more after that when home. After I was married (at 21) I held all the family Holiday parties for many (even though our income and home were small). Since my divorce I’ve been lazier (but not like Jan – I at least did flank steaks “chicken fried” with decent side dishes) and now that kids all married and moved out (and I got laid off after 67) I have returned to cooking, but only whole grains and lots of produce with organic meats in small portions. It is important for me now to try to stay healthy and I prefer to never take any medicines (I used to take Sudafed practically all year for allergies but now tissues suffice since I learned it is an ingredient in Meth drugs). All meds are POISON! I lowered cholesterol without any and my Medicare has NO DRUG coverage because I refuse any!

Death by salad says it all! At least one of them needs to take a cooking class! Maybe in an adult education program?

Taco salad and quiche both involve heat (cooking.)

Which clobbers her on 60% of her ideas:

I think that out of self-preservation, Alex is going to become a great chef.

Chef salad often contains hard-boiled eggs and bacon.

It depends on how the salad is prepared. The wrong mix-ins or dressing can make a hamburger seem like a more sensible choice.
