As a Texan, I can state with authority that it doesn’t take much brains or talent to become governor of Texas. All it requires, in recent history, is a certain level of political cunning, a willingness to cater to the most ignorant and mean-spirited elements of the electorate and an “R” by one’s name on the state ballot. Rick Perry is finding out that the standards for national leadership are somewhat higher than what passes for leadership in Lone Star country.
