I’m with you KoKo. Barbaric. If the dogs were meant to have short, stubby tails and ears that stand up and are pointy they’d have been born that way. The first time I ever saw a doberman with ears and tail left intact I was amazed at how beautiful they were. If getting their tails caught in doors is an issue then their owners need to be a little more mindful of where their pet is, just as they would their child’s fingers.
Give the primary share of the blame to the AKC for perpetuating “breed standards.” They help promote not only such barbaric practices as docking tails and cropping or “training” ears, but also breeding for appearance rather than dog health. Thus we get German shepherds with hip displacia, pugs and bulldogs that can barely breathe and regularly overheat, etc., etc. Thank God there aren’t such aesthetic standards for people, or I would have been put to sleep long ago.
To fishbulb239: The AKC only officially recognizes the breeds as purebred. It’s the parent breed clubs that come up with the standards. These standards have to be in place long before the breed is recognized. They are the ones that have to make amendments to it. But if there were laws against docking and cropping, with no exceptions, then they will have to change the breed standard in order to comply with the law. And yes, people should be careful about doors where their pets are concerned. If you’re too much in hurry, it’s your fault not that of the dog. Dogs were born with tails and ears and using the door excuse to justify removal is pretty poor. I would like to know what the excuse is for docking a horse’s tail is. Must be just as lame.
When i got my poodle, he was already docked. Later, in Germany, i saw two poodles with tails, and they were just beautiful, why would someone cut them off?

I agree. Same goes for dew claws. They are a dogs’ toe. I ask my vet and even he says it is mutilation.
