    A hacked mattress?…. What a tragedy.

People chop up their stuff when they throw it away because they can’t stand the thought that someone else might pick it out of their trash and get some use out of it. My mother in law would cut the cords off of appliances so no one could pull them out, fix them up, and use them again. I have always found that type of action to be extremely selfish. A “If I can’t have it, then no one can” type of mentality.

The Greeks had some familiarity with mattress-cide long before the Romans. And I’m sure the Sumerians, Hittites, Mesopotamians, Babylonians and others did as well.

In college, I bought a used mattress from a thrift shop that turned out to have bedbugs. Hacking it up before putting it at the curb could be a kindness.
