So once again, because one segment of society had prepared themselves better, and had invested in things other than PS3 games, gold chains and 40’s of malt liquor… they are somehow evil?.Bad individual economic situations are almost 100% of the time caused by bad individual decision. Usually multiple bad decisions piled on top of each other..It is not my job to bail you out for making poor decisions…
Ditto. Well sad, grayhares01. Now, I’m hearing things that “they” might tie social security to ones own wealth. That is, those who saved while working won’t be eligible to collect medicare / Social Security. I have nothing against someone chosing NOT to collect their SS because he d/n need it. But it gauls me that Uncle Sugar might penalize those who saved.
Health care is too expensive. Small business can’t afford to provide health care. Welfare provides health care benefits. If you have someone who is sick in the family, which direction would you take?
If in “Hispanics” you mean illegal aliens, then I say shoot for 100% unemployment for the illegals, and 0% unemployment for citizens of Hispanic ancestry.
While I have no reason to doubt Rall’s statistic above, I suspect “race” as used here correlates strongly to “class.” Them what already had (Black, Brown, White), got. Them what hadn’t (Black, Brown, White), lost.
A lot of ‘blame the victim’ posts here. People are poor because they’re stupid and lazy? Sometimes, but the people who were already on welfare shouldn’t have seen much of an income change, now should they? Blacks & Hispanics were more likely to lose their jobs. They were also buying houses in places that saw big property value drops. You can call that stupid, but there were plenty of realtors, bankers and appraisers who were working together to create what they knew was a bubble, but didn’t care as long as they got paid.Fritziod brings up a good point: How did poor whites fare? This may be class related, not race related.
We have got to get away from this whole black/white/hispanic nonsense. It’s just a ruse for the haves to keep attention from the real problem. All the wealth is collecting in the hands of a few. I live in a rural Kentucky area with few minorities. You’d better believe that there are many, many whites out there experiencing poverty. People who dream of a $10 an hour job with a few benefits. Good, smart people who couldn’t overcome the poverty that they were born into but keep trying anyway. It’s a matter of class and wealth, or lack of it. Not race.
Rall’s dates and data are correct, but the complex problem is best simplified with one word: Greed. Of course the seeds of the collapse go back to 1980. Like growing a tree, sometimes you have to wait years, but still look to the seed for the source.
Well said mattro. What a disgusting amount of racism is on display.Inciteful statistics Ted. Also, you are confusing those who can’t figure out why you chose those dates. (let me guess, those are the years you had a statistic for, duh)
Though the “grayhaired” commenter might deny it, there really is such a thing as racism.
To argue (1) that poverty is purely a matter of individual decisions, caused by spending too much on malt liquor, and (2) that blacks and hispanics make FOUR TIMES as many bad decisons as whites – well, that just tells me that someone’s personal circle of acquaintances doesn’t include a representative sample of whites, blacks, and hispanics.
But, grayhair, even if you don’t personally know any blacks or Latinos, just ask yourself if Donald Trump’s wealth owes more to his high IQ & brilliant decision-making, or to inheriting $400 million form his daddy. Then just extrapolate a little bit.

Yeah, blame it on the MAN (loser speak for “white guy”) when you are too sick, lame and lazy to try and live without depending on Uncle Sugar’s teat!
