i’m glad to see this is still going. it used to be in chgo trib when i was growing up;this brings back memories of sunday mornings with my dad. i know, corny right? first comic in which the characters aged over time.
Dumb receptionist doesn’t even know cat talk (nor does Rufus who should) but you have indoor only kitties who never go outside. Then there are indoor/outdoor kitties who usually have a flap door to come in and out or maybe their owner lets them in and out. Then there are ferals who don’t have an owner at all, most ferals never had an owner so they are afraid of people and you can feed them but they may never trust you enough to let you touch them. Other ferals had an owner at one time so they may become more trusting. Right now we feed one of each in the backyard and I got to pick up the one we suspect had an owner at one time.
Many years ago they had a story line where Slim and Clovia were on a date at a drive-in movie and Slim got his truck stuck in the mud. Joel and Rufus arrived to help. After many ropes, pulleys, etc. they ended up just about tearing off the end of the movie screen. That’s when I became hooked on GA.
What she wants to know is if Rufus Kitty’s been bit or maybe ate some poison while outside. And being hefty of build and colored brown doesn’t make her Gertie’s daughter fer petesakes. Enough with the Gerties already. What a pain!
In the three, early am, emergency visits to the vet I have done, all the receptionist wanted on sign in was kitties name and if it was a stray, for their data base so the vet had a place to put the case notes.
Then they do a fast check on the cat, and then worried about my information.
Payment has never been discussed beforehand, but costs are brought up during examination, to decide on course of action.
In one case, when I was cat sitting (the owner abandoned the cat on me, but I din not know it yet) the clinic treated the case as a stray or feral, and treated the cat with no charge to me.
We’ve had several feral cats, they were indoor cats after we got them. They never trusted us, and would always stay at least an arms length away. Feral cats are just cats born in the wild.

The comments a few months back made sense. Gertie may be making up for an old character in the 1920s. This one, I’m not so sure.
