This reminds me of Garth Steins "the Art of Racing in the Rain. Enzo the dog telling the story is jealous of monkeys because they have opposable thumbs. He thinks they were wasted on them. It’s the last night of his life and he’s sure he’s going to come back as a human and have opposable thumbs.

Anyone with this problem should look into getting a Buddy Bowl, they really cut down on the splashing!
