I tell my kids they should never kill animals or plants needlessly, and when necessary, use the most humane method practical. For solitary insects, a quick squish is probably the most humane (and efficient). I hate it when people grab a can of neurotoxic, carcinogenic spray to do in a single cockroach - and it then writhes in agony for 10 seconds.
