Why do you think “granny” is already using a walker? Reagan.

^Funny picture, oldie. And yeah, comments sections are always a laugh, always get off topic but aren’t always on health care. Though, I suppose with a broken leg, it was inevitable.

Why do people accept it when the elephant pretends he’s not part of big government?

Republicans trying to pare down government cost these days is a joke. Maybe they used to be fiscally responsible, but the last 8 years were an orgy of unfunded mandates, carefree spending with no thought of deficits, and the gleeful uncoupling of the economy from regulation. Now republicans are telling the public that they were not part of the process and just exist to protect them from “government”.

And “conservatives” are buying it! I’m supposed to be nice and overlook that, and just accept that American history started 1/21/09 and that it’s just bad, and the elephant will save us. Sheesh.

Yeah, scottf, I’m that dumb. Republicans need to just, oh you know, get back into line.

    Democrats are 100% evil.

And why am I supposed to take you seriously?

I don’t need advice from someone who calls me a demon, a godless (gasp) dog and a moron several times a day.

Peddle your hate toward someone else.

Amazing. Yeah, scott, Democrats sell out to the “leftist radicals.” That must be why Democrats voted for land redistribution (most farmland is in the hands of corporations), creating a national healthcare service, protecting American workers against Chinese and Mexican lower-paid workers by voting down NAFTA, forcing a Fairness Doctrine to ensure both sides are heard, raising taxes on the rich to the levels found back in the 1980s, ensuring that unions are protected against corporate raiders, and requiring all factories and cars to be greener. Oops – except they didn’t do ANY of those things, did they? And most of those things are moderate. Clearly you don’t know what a “leftist radical” really is, and are defining it as anything left of Rush Limbaugh. And if you want to talk corrupt - check out the Bush Administration!

Apparently the pup is pi**## about something. Aside from that I want government that works for me, is efficient and makes the USA a better place to live.

pup, why do you think government exists? To serve the populace, no? Zan is saying that an efficient government that serves it’s citizens and moves the “ship of state” forward is a good thing. You’re going to remember this, huh?

What exactly is your beef, how come you never ever add anything but hate, and why are you so proud of it? Government includes republicans and independents too, if you’d like to refer back to the topic of the toon.

Should a government work against you? Or for you? Sheesh. Now if zan had said “only me”, then I could see it.

I have to agree with ezdeb. Is it not possible - better yet desirable - for the government to work for the people, as it should, and at the same time as how we can work to make the country a better place? Remember, the government works for the country, and we are the country. But the government is made up of people like you and me. So, we can all work to make the country better – I know I certainly try – and can simultaneously expect the government to work for us.

Getting back to efficiency in the government, that is a goal that would be very worthwhile. If the money that went in to the disaster that is Iraq had gone into this country’s infrastructure, what a positive difference that would have made. If the government had been in control of regulation of banking and Wall Street, the taxpayers may not have had to bail out these bankers using basically, Socialism. Reagan said “the problem is government”, I say the problem is not government, it is inefficient, crooked government that does not meet the needs of the citizens. Thanks, ezdeb.

It always amazes me how so many conservatives see only military service as worthy of praise in America. The hawks get the money; those who fight for infrastructure improvement, energy alternatives, green spaces for communities, healthcare for all citizens, etc are not considered heroes, or even very productive. In fact, they are often belittled and their gifts not recognized till much later. If priority and spending are indications of a nation’s values, I guess we love guns and war and missile systems…

It’s often portrayed as the economy vs the environment, or vs green energy, or vs pollution controls, or vs civil rights, etc. Everything has to be us vs them somehow, even though history shows otherwise. You’d think that they would learn that new ideas can’t shatter our republic.

Think what we could do for employment, health-care, clean energy, public transportation, education, housing and poverty –if half of the pentagon funds and personnel were redirected and retrained to those sectors. All those things cost so much less than war and military bases.

Government is supposed to have a fiduciary relationship with the public, not sell itself to corporate bidders. If the cost of campaigning is truly the reason our congresspeople are bought, then campaign spending has to be limited to a minimal amount and funded through grants, not donations.
