Joe, it’s worth noting that neither Odie nor Buckles in the toons, nor every real-life dog I’ve ever seen either, finds a leash his best friend in the world. If a dog is his freedom, then the leash with its captivity is definitely his arch-rival.
That’s the first time I’ve seen Odie on a leash in a LONG time! He and the leash were as stiff as a board when his original owner Lyman tried to take him for a walk in a blizzard (10 December 1978).
Leashes aren’t just dogs’ archrivals, they’re also their krytponite.

My dog was happy to see the leash when he wanted a walk, until he smelt something interesting, then he wanted off the bloody thing.
