The nude male model we had in art class was actually the most interesting one. Apparently he had been taking classes in human anatomy to better his modeling.
As for working from photos, well that is a valid suggestion hilariously expanded upon in “Even a monkey can draw manga”, but one of our exercises was to draw moving models, which I found very interesting.
