Petergrt,
Clinton talked of “going after” pirate bases on the ground in Somalia, a “hot pursuit” policy that was authorized by the U.N. in December but has not yet been undertaken by the U.S. because of liability concerns among military officials. Despite those comments, Clinton did not specifically call for using military force against the pirates.
“These pirates are criminals, they are armed gangs on the sea. And those plotting attacks must be stopped,” she said. “We may be dealing with a 17th-century crime, but we need to bring 21st-century solutions to bear.”
What part of that statement says diplomacy? And, are you saying we should go into Somalia w/ military force?
” Clinton: Time to Seize Pirate Loot Urges diplomacy to douse bandit activities ” NBC.
21st century solution is diplomacy.
I don’t advocate going into Somalia - we were there once and got our butts kicked. UN is impotent. The 21st century rules of engagement that we insist on adhering to, such as not pursuing the pirates, not arming the vessels, and etc. are silly.
What’s wrong with diplomacy? Too “fancy ” for the righties? Aren’t the pirates dead enough for you guys? Maybe we should have stuffed their bodies and have them displayed in the GOP headquarters.
With that particular case, diplomacy was not the answer, but diplomacy doesn’t mean softness.
Ms Frog, there are several posters who have possible testosterone poisoning and fear of EFD, hence the blood and guts reaction to almost everything. Obama handled the situation decisively but he will NEVER be given credit for it.
Don’t you find it least bit preposterous that the President, the most powerful person on the planet had to give his OK to use lethal force in saving the captain from the pirates? That is not meant as a criticism of Obama as I think that any administration would have handled it the same way, as the French have done a few days earlier, but it is an observation of how timid we, the civilized West, have become.

Obama / Clinton answer is diplomacy.

Obama didn’t try diplomacy on this! Diplomacy is fine with dealing with countries, but rogue individuals is another tale!

Thank you petergrt.
Read the article. Seems eminently reasonable.
Good to see that we have competent folks handling these problems now!

why are the pirates depicted as arabs? is it because ramirez is an idiot or a racist jackass?
CorosiveFrog Premium Member about 15 years ago
Eeeh, no it wasn’t diplomacy and sometimes violence is the answer but we need to be civilized enough to know when to use it and when not to.
Do you know what testosterone poisoning is, petergrt? Because you seem like a big case of it.
