The conservatism that I profess was in vocal opposition to “W’s” Iraq policy.
William Buckley, Pat Buchanan and George Will were opposed to, or highly critical of, the Iraq invasion.
Buckley said that “W” was not a conservative. (Nor was his father.)
Thinking back to the Gulf War, I recall that the United States essentially gave Iraq a green light to invade Kuwait.
Then U.S. Ambassador (April Glaspie) was in consulations with Iraq about their intentions towards Kuwait.
Glaspie and Saddam danced a little diplomatic two-step until Saddam laid it on the line and said that he believed Kuwait belonged to Iraq, and what was the opinion of the U.S. government.
Glaspie said the following:
“We have no opinion on your Arab-Arab conflicts, such as your dispute with Kuwait. Secretary (of State James) Baker has directed me to emphasise the instruction, first given to Iraq in the 1960s, that the Kuwait issue is not associated with America.”
That meeting took place one week before Iraq invaded Kuwait.
But even two days before the invasion John Kelly, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, testified to Congress that the “United States has no commitment to defend Kuwait and the U.S. has no intention of defending Kuwait if it is attacked by Iraq.”
Well , the ugly history of that diplomatic gaffe continues to wound us.
Now, Obama seems intent on escalating the war in Afghanistan.
I mean, Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, Britain and the Soviets could not conquer that land.
Too, Obama has to worry about Pakistani nukes falling into the hands of the Taliban.
Tigger, I honestly don’t know what the answers are, but that if America had implemented a foreign policy that was in alignment with the views of our Founders, then maybe our nation would be more secure today.
