Ah yes. The “New” Coke. Only to be quickly replaced when the corporate bean counters finally got the message that no one liked or was buying the new.

What a marketing disaster! I remember it well.

There is a metatextual irony in defunct comic strip characters philosophizing about being unchanging, always the same forever….

28 years later and you are still 10 years old and romping among the daisies.

New Coke supposedly came about because in blind taste tests, avowed Coke lovers actually preferred Pepsi. New Coke was supposed to taste more like Pepsi, and in pre-release blind taste tests people preferred it to old Coke.

Lesson? We don’t know what the eff we like unless the right brand name is attached to it.

Anyone here ever done a blind taste test of your favorite carbonated beverage, its various competitors, and its store-brand version? Me neither. I buy store brand, and only when it’s on sale.

BTW Binkley – Don’t ever watch Arrested Development. You’ll have a stroke.

New Coke was to compete with Pepsi in taste. I have seen the new Coke machines with dozens of pushbuttons for flavors. Maybe there is room there to reintroduce the New Coke and maybe win back some of the losses from the first time?
