    If you know what the song is really about, then the line “you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave” makes a whole lot more sense.

    Don’t know if it’s still there, but for years if you drove south on Highway 17 (now 880) through Oakland, California, there was a large neon sign to your right that said “HOTEL CALIFORNIA.” Looked just like the one on the album.

    There is a Hotel California on California Ave in Palo Alto CA; I stayed there in mid-80s and it’s still there. They had the lyrics of the song posted in their lobby.
