I used to have a little flock of cockatiels. Whenever I went away, they ignored me for that many days when I returned. Except the time I had surgery, they seemed to know and came to see me in the bedroom as soon as I got home.
I had to go on business for a month to Texas on a “3-day trip”. When I got back Kirby (who rarely meowed) meowed for a full half hour welcoming me back, telling me about stuff that had happened and how Johnny Depp had not acknowledged that I had left him in charge.
It took both us looking for that half hour to find Johnny Depp, who eventually came out from under the deck, yawned and gave me the “Oh, it’s you.” look. :)
