Great idea. How often does it need to be reapplied?

Silicone spray works as well, and lasts longer.

Mix cayenne pepper with the bird seed – doesn’t bother the birds and the furry critters will leave it alone (photography tip) – after a few attempts, the furry critters look else where, now you can put up the fancy bird feeders.

I tried that but it didn’t work as well as a dome shaped gimmick that stops them completely.

There are some very funny videos of squirrels trying to get to the seed in bird feeders. I especially like the ones where the squirrel is spun around and around, refusing to let go… ☺

When I was a kid my folks actually did something like this with our bird feeder, but I think they used butter. It only worked for a while. Squirrels ALWAYS manage to find some alternate way of achieving their goal.

    I’m sure that’s a temporary deterrent, they’re clever creatures.

Pretty cruel – a squirrel can’t really get oil off its fur and may freeze to death.

Oil or silicone spray, etc., has to be very carefully applied, so that there is no chance of it getting on the birds feathers as they fly in and out. Some birds do land on the poles to get in line for a busy feeder. And after several days, the oil starts gumming up and you have a dirty, gummy mess on your bird feeding station. As someone else stated, I’ve had the best luck with a cone or dome shaped baffle mounted on the pole a couple feet up from the ground.

We had a problem with snakes getting into a certain birds’ nests, so we put a squirrel guard above the nest and sprayed it so the snake couldn’t get a grip. Danged critter slid off the dome and -splat – into the nest. The birds were in it att he time, and pecked the snake on the head until it fell back out of the nest.

We don’t have squirrels where I live in Phoenix. So there isn’t a problem. Do have a problem with bees at the hummingbird feeders though…they tend to clog it up.

I did that once with bearing grease. I watched a fuzzy tailed tree rat approach and jump from about 3’ away to a point on the pole about 3’ high. He was on the pole for about 0.00021 seconds and was instantly back on the ground looking up at it. Hilarious.
