I was a teaching assistant for the University of california. They gave me an extra pay check once. They asked for it back, and I was okay with that, but they wanted to charge me interest as well. I said “I didn’t sign any promissory note.” And I never heard back from them.

This is known as “clawback”, which works only if they can afford better lawyers (so, often).
