I only remember seeing this sort of thing one other time. Late ’90’s, Chris Pronger, playing for the St. Louis Blues in an NHL playoff game, took a hard slapshot to the chest. The puck hit him exactly in the worst spot – right where his heart lives. He took a couple strides, then dropped. Trainer/medical staff on site cut away his gear and did CPR and I believe paddles were used. He was successfully resuscitated while lying on the ice. The man was back on the ice playing in the next game 2 nights later. Hockey players are the toughest people in sports. Crazy, but tough :)
Hang on, this was not a “shocking event”. It has even been called “routine” tackle by sports medical observers. I watched it live and saw nothing unusual until he stood, wobbled and fell. In 1971 Detroit Lions receiver Chuck Hughs died in a game (blood clots) -that was 52 years ago. The Lions have played 800 games and run 100,000 plays. And that’s just one team. (aprox) This tragic event was shocking but the game is not to blame.
Jason Whitlock column:“My point is that football is not unique. Men and women take risks playing sports, riding the subway, swimming in a pool or the ocean. There’s no reason to blame football for what happened to Damar Hamlin. Like Hughes, Hamlin could very well have a preexisting condition that contributed to cardiac arrest.

I’ve watched a lot of football over the years, but I’ve never seen anything like that. He seems like a great kid, I sure hope he’ll be alright.

Mike, I do apologize. I had written your soul off. It appears you still have traces of one. Thank you.
