Ah now today I’m fairly sure that this is Nerwin not Irwin lol… In todays economy it’s probably the best use for it ;)

[Re-Post] Just in case you want to make a fashion statement lol (the technological break through is really exciting)

[Edit]prasrinivara I am at least consciously aware of the differences, but I do read my daily strips within 3-5 minutes of waking up (they are like coffee to my humour muscles), unfortunately the logical part of my brain takes 22 hours to wake up ;)

DreamScourge, it’s quite easy to tell; Irwin is somewhat older, doesn’t wear a hat and doesn’t throw tantrums anytime. But Nerwin was partly named after Irwin (“Nerd” + “Irwin”)

Paper dollars hadn’t weren’t issued yet at the time of the story. British pounds were called sterling because they were sterling silver, too.

The Mt. Vernon website http://www.mountvernon.org/visit/plan/index.cfm/pid/808/ has a good FAQ about George Washington that includes an answer debunking the dollar-throwing myth.

The origin of the story seems to be that George was recorded as having thrown a piece of slate “about the size of a dollar” across the much smaller Rappahannock River, perhaps a distance of 250 feet.

(I question, however, the good ladies of Mt. Vernon on one point. They say there were no silver dollars when GW was young. Actually there had been large silver coins called talers, thalers, dolars, etc., throughout Europe from about the 1500’s. The word also was applied to the Spanish peso (the original piece-of-eight, whence “two bits” meaning a quarter dollar). The peso continued as U.S. legal tender into the early 1800’s.)

No matter what I do, I am not receiving anything via email - do others here get the daily mailings?

If you go to Mt. Vernon, and go down to the dock, you can easily see why this would have been impossible. The world-record holder in the discus would not have been able to throw a coin across the Potomac at that point, it’s too wide. (I’m a Marylander, live in MD now, born in DC)

But, “#1 redskins fan”, how do you know that the Potomac was the same width then as it is now?

Henryhurst - I believe the daily email is only available if you go Pro.

    .

I haven’t gone Pro and have gotten my daily classic Foxtrot (one allowed to non-pros) almost every day. Every once in a while there is a problem and I don’t get Foxtrot for a few days, then I get all of the ones that were missed at once. I’m not sure what Henryhurst’s problem is, but not being Pro isn’t it.
