What’s not showing in this simplistic ’toon is the specter of nuclear war set off by the crazy guy just off screen here. And, by the way, actively dragging those victims under.
Oh, my if that doesn’t catch their plight and our dishonor. Czechoslovakia invokes it’s siren calls. Granted our unease at provoking war possibly nuclear, does not change the fact their plight is not answered militarily by the U.S.of A and NATO.
I’m pretty sure that Kuwait was not a member of NATO, but look how fast we got in there. Afghanistan was not NATO, we were there for 20 long years. Not saying we should fight for the Ukraine, just seeing some hypocrisy here.
True, Ukraine is not a NATO member. However, we guaranteed protection when they gave up their nukes. Sigh. With that, the Afghanistan mess, and other broken promises, I wonder why anyone would trust any U.S. promises.
Should NATO be involved in every conflict, or just if the people are white? I don’t recall any people complaining how NATO did nothing during the conflict in Syria.
Military theorist Carl von Clausewitz noted that “War is the continuation of policy with other means.” So are sanctions and boycotts. Their advantage is that they’re considerably less destructive. Unfortunately, they’re no more selective than bombs or bullets.
Actually, a more “apt” analogy would be depicting some “Fire Departments” in the American East that require homeowners pay a subscription to belong – you don’t “pay” and, if your house catches fire, they still show up, but only to make sure that “your” fire doesn’t spread to their subscribers’ homes – and, yes, as unbelievable as it sounds, such occurrences have happened.
So, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is not the ONLY organization that has such policies – it hits a lot closer to home than that, people.
How about a nice game of Chess? Honestly this is a Catch 22 unlike any I’ve witnessed. All happening with IMO a very weak American leadership. This is the worse case scenario many of us had when Biden/Harris team took over. Yet here we are, let’s all hope their decisions are the best available to them.
NATO is a war machine. It has outlived it’s uselessness. It should be abolished and maybe we could spend the money we waste on NATO to help the 40 million living in poverty in America.
Perhaps the political scientist Seva Gunitsky put it best when he wrote on Twitter recently, “the people calling for a no-fly zone should explicitly say they are willing to risk nuclear war and the people calling for backing off should explicitly say they are willing to tolerate war crimes. there is no moral high ground for anyone here.”
Hell, let’s just have a nuclear exchange and end all this bickering and stupidity. Most of humanity will be destroyed and maybe the surviving Australians and lower Southern Hemisphere people will start fresh.
And now this brief word from Dr. 23, purveyor of cures for non-existent ailments.
As we prepare for yet another semi-annual episode of collective national insanity, let me point out to all prospective candidates for Congress that your one sure-fire campaign issue — one that would rally support from the entire political spectrum — would be to end forever the confusing, useless, expensive, and totally ineffective switching back and forth from Daylight Saving to ironically named “Standard” Time. For the love of God, just PICK ONE and stick to it!

That’s the point! NATO is NOT the World Police. That was never their intent or design. It is a mutual defense compact.

I’ll miss your strip after you’ve gone to Ukraine to fight in a “freedom brigade”, Bob. Don’t volunteer other people and their families otherwise.

Somebody needs to remind NATO that Hitler started out by “Only” invading the Sudetenland—and then Poland—an then……!

Time for the Jewish Space Lasers to go into action! Or, maybe, the United Nations (is that still a thing?).
