When my friend was living in Hollywood, she thought about getting a puppy for protection. Being a smart young person, she asked around first. Dogs have to be walked several times a day, also in the dark. This exposes you to more “crime” for a year or so before the dog is big enough to provide any kind of deterrence. Plus, you wind up with an adult dog. She decided against it.
