It’s too bad the progressives don’t have more pull with the system but that’s just the way things work. More progressive candidates win? More progressive agenda items get taken care of.
The Democrats have spent more time and energy shutting down and slandering their own Progressives than they have fighting the worst of the Republicans whom they “reach out to” in “the spirit of bipartisanship”. And that is why we will be a fascist one Party Republican failed State four years from now. And the Democrats will wring their hands and say “Nobody saw this coming. Oh well, we will work with the new Regime and reach across the aisle.”
To paraphrase a political analyst, whose name slips my mind, “Conservatives say ‘Liberals are the devil!’ And Democrats say, ‘We want to reach out to the other side.’”
No, I’m sorry, both the infrastructure bill and the build back better bill are progressive ideas. Yes, they had to compromise to gain passage of the former bill, but that’s the nature of getting legislation passed. The progressives were still able to boast at pushing the moderates toward their way of thinking and getting our infrastructure fixed.
Polls that are taken on issues and bills without specifying what party holds which position show more people agree with the Dems issues, even the progressive ones.
There’s a procedural issue at the core of all of this, namely partisan primaries, in which the winning Democrat is the one most appealing to the leftist activists in the party’s base and the winning Republican is the one most appealing to the rightist activists in that party’s base. When those 2 square off in the general election, small wonder that the sensible moderate majority in the middle looks at both of them and wonders whether to vote for the lesser of two evils or just give it all up as a lost cause and not vote at all.
Fortunately, there’s an answer to this: instant-runoff voting, in which anybody with sufficient signatures on a nominating petition can get on the general-election ballot, and the voters rank them all in order of preference. Those with the lowest vote totals get progressively dropped off and their votes reallocated to their 2nd choices (etc.) until someone has an absolute majority. Encourages participation, produces sane results, costs half as much to administer.
Unfortunately, it’ll only happen if it’s enacted by the same people who are the clear beneficiaries of the current system.
Progressive democrats are the only ones representing the American people. All the republicans and all “moderate” corporate democrats are thoroughly captured by corporate and financial special interests.
Well the Night of Broken Long Knives Culture Revolution Breaking Glass Purge Night is apparently upon Us. You just can’t accept Progressives flew way to close to the Sun. Next time use Gorillas Glue rather than Wax on those Feathers you Commies.
