Yeah, some awesome weapons and fun (for a technologist) to develop but sobering when you think of the possible effects on humanity. Thank God we haven’t done an all-out war.
A considerable amount of our foreign policy is in the form of deals on arms and munitions in support of ‘friendly’ governments, serving a dual purpose as a subsidy to the manufacturers.
It’s not about the number of people employed in the weapons industry, it’s about the profit margins of the CEOs who run the weapons industry, who also happen to have a controlling interest in the government.
Peace? Have you played online games lately? Even in the “peaceful” exploration ones like No Man’s Sky, there are griefers who will go out of their way to mess with innocent players just for the lulz. The world is full of such people, and also full of their brethren who believe that it is the right of the strong to dominate the weak (see recent events in Myanmar and elsewhere as a reference). For these reasons alone, any country that wants to survive as an independent state is going to need a strong military. Just one of those necessary evils until human nature changes (snerk).

Eisenhower summed that up succinctly in a speech he made before ending his presidency: “Beware of the military-industrial complex”.

World peace is a farce. You can’t even get a level of peace between Ford and Chevy guys when it comes to trucks for God’s sake.
It is a lofty ambition though.

Kind of the truth isn’t it. It may bring America to its knees.. eventually, but for now.. spend baby spend.

This actually happened at the end of the Cold War. Arms sales dropped so much the US went into recession. Bush’s answer was to invade Iraq.

This is also the reason TSA hasn’t cut back, even though terrorism has reduced drastically during the pandemic.

When William James wrote about the necessity for a moral equivalent of war, he forgot about the need for an economic equivalent.

Most mammals are competitive by nature. I don’t know if it’s humanly possible to avoid conflict.

Is that Captain Obvious standing next to the politician? This press conference is the perfect place for him.
