We could have overthrown Castro’s regime decades ago by loosening up our trade and investment policies in Cuba, (and of course, stopping our idiotic assasination attempts.) The right-wing followers of Batista who took over Miami and south-Florida have kept US and the people of Cuba captive in a 50-year old political purgatory.
^ The reality is only Castro’s change of mindset could solve the problem. A fool should be left to his folly, as was the case with Fidel. Eventually, he learned. Us feeding his folly would have only exacerbated the issue, not stopped it sooner.
Example: The bums on the street corner usually has no intention of changing the reason why most are still there. Thus, no matter how much money and food and clothes you would hand the bums, they will still be bums. They will still feed their addictions and still be irresponsible. The only way that cycle stops is when that bum changes his mind of his own accord.
Or, the alcoholic. You can’t cure the person of his/her habit until they want to be. All you can do is try your best to not feed his/her habit, condemn the wrong actions and praise the good when they happen.
The same principles apply to Cuba. But understand it’s much worse. There was a god complex involved as well. So you don’t give a pyro a book of matches.
However, you understand that people do need help, and thus there was a means to help provide families in Cuba with the financial help, among other methods, that their ruler had no intention of helping them acquire or have access too. The down side is that money eventually ends up back in Castro’s pockets, further propping up his regime. The hope is that it does some good to the good and oppressed people of Cuba before it feeds the beast.
Likewise, do you think Kim in N Korea, who shared Castro’s similar governmental philosophies has any intention of giving his people any kind of freedom whether there was an embargo or not there? Of course not. The people are not in control.. and evil dictator is.
We made the right choice with Cuba and Castro was embarrassed time and time again every time someone sought American shores.
And as a result, he eventually got his act together just before he’s sure to die of age. At least that’s the way I see it.
