Our town has had a recycling program for decades … and it’s a money maker for the town!

C’mon, Darkeforce, think of all the gas and pollution that you’d spend in driving to another city for that. Here in Boise, they went to unsorted recycling (except glass) a year or so ago, and they’re talking about adding glass pickup.

Is there actually a municipality anywhere in the U.S. that doesn’t have Blue Box service? It’s hard to imagine. And if they’re that broke, can they afford garbage pickup? That costs as much as Blue Box pickup, when you include the long term cost of landfilling the garbage.

we have a recycling program, blue bin, and you sort everything in it from glass to books, to standard cardboard and soda cans,, it is common practice here in Canada to do it! In fact you get frowned at by your peers and neighbours if you DON’T recycle!

Years ago I took my recyclables to igloos in neighboring towns but for the last few years, our trash pick-up company has offered recycling pick-up every week (on our trash pick-up day.) However, we get charged extra for it! The weird thing is that the recycling truck comes around with 2 people in it to pick stuff up, but the trash truck comes with one poor worker to drive the truck, get out, and empty trash cans. Hard work–especially in the summer. I appreciate it, though.

on my block, everyone thinks anything paper, glass, etc can be recycled

the city hires day laborers to sort it and toss out most of it

When you live in a rural environment recycling is even harder. I do recycle aluminum cans and paper at work, but at home I’d have to drive so far to do anything with the little we’d have to recycle that I’d waste more energy than save.
