But hey, you guys are missing out all the fun of watching those guys spitting tobacco and scratching their crotches…to say nothing of those idiots in the grandstands boozing, teaching the young ones new cuss words and getting into fights.

Baseball is really fun to watch and less important than education. I’d have no problem with having local teams of players who are paid no more than my teacher spouse. AA and AAA ball are great. The huge machine that is the big leagues bores me.

Hey N7326 Foxtrot, always nice to meet a fellow pilot. I used to own a 1968 Cessna 177 Cardinal with a Horton STOL kit. It was the 150 hp version, much like your Cherokee 140. I always preferred the high wing due to ease of entry/exit and ground visibility. I still tell everyone that flying is the most fun you can have.

Professional athletes and performers get paid more than teachers, and most of the rest of us, because their skills create jobs and income for other people, not just for themselves. The more income they generate for others, and the more people they keep employed, the more they can expect to get themselves.

If they would just pay me, what they pay A-Rod, I would gladly be a teacher!

I don’t watch sports, but it’s entertainment, just like movies, TV, books, comic strips. Do you really want to strip our lives of all things considered fun and focus solely on the world’s disasters?

Besides which, you couldn’t take the money going into sports and spend it fixing problems because that money is generated by the sports. It’s not like that’s tax money. People voluntarily give their money to the teams to be entertained for a few hours.

Sports stars, like actors, models, sales people, make more money because they generate more money. I agree that teachers should make more, but they are not actually doing anything to directly generate money for the people who pay them.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why someone cannot be a sports fan AND support humanitarian causes! Yes, there are issues to address, but why not have a pleasant distraction? A person could go crazy without them. I’m not going to begrudge a professional athlete’s talent or his compensation for it because I’m not jealous of it. Just sayin’. I doubt A-Rod or LeBron could do my job, either. But have you ever noticed the amount a person is paid is in inverse relation to what they contribute to society?

I’m going to say this anyway. I don’t care or watch sports. For teacher’s here where I live they have a tough time working with limited money help. Budget cuts are not helping teacher with resources on working with children. Then children get board and cause problem in class rooms. And here I thought Joan would take a shower or do something different while Val and Wally watch sports and keep kids busy.

I never usually watch sports but watched an “important game” last year while one sone was visiting (he at least made it less like a dentist visit by explaining particulars about the scoring etc) and I even promised to watch the next after his visit ended. I watched it as I watch “live” news, with a significant delay so I could FF when I want._ I also think not only pro athletes by movie “stars” today are overpaid (and now even reality show wannabe’s are demanding big $$- how totally outrageous)!

Consider that the highest paid public employee in most state is a football coach and you can see how absurd things have become.

Besides reading the comics every day (what a joy it was to discover that I didn’t have to buy the newspaper every day, and accumulate vast amounts of paper!), I also entertain myself with something for which none of the performers gets paid anything: following birds with what they call nestcams.

That is, they put cameras in strategic locations near the (potential) nests of various bird families, so that when the birds do move in, they can just go about their business as tho the cameras weren’t there at all.

This year I am following some falcons; some owls; and - the star for this year - a nest of bald-headed eagles. There are three babies, about the size of large turkeys I think - but that makes them small for eagles. Covered with grey fluff. Can’t hardly even stand up, let alone walk - I’ve never seen them eat so far, When I am watching they are usually asleep.

Should anyone want the web address (now let’s see if this works):

    http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles#utmcampaign=synclickback&source=http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,20668222066165_2066145,00.html&medium=3064708

I’m not sure if you can say that it worked. Anyway, don’t try to type it all out. Use Copy and Paste.

You can watch them 24/7. At night infrared has been added. It doesn’t bother the birds, but it makes them visible to humans.

Well, I see from the various panels that Luci will grow up loving sports on tv herself - and also Max, to judge from the last panel.

When I was little, I used to watch the hockey games on tv with my father. As I recall, I just wanted to be sitting with him in a companionable way. Periodically I would ask him to explain the rules. And no, it didn’t take. But today, if I knew a bunch of people who wanted to watch sports on tv, I would want to join them. I find it very relaxing because my brain goes into neutral gear and takes a rest.

I’m with Joan. Anytime it’s “sports” season (488 days a year), the local news is always pre-empted because we all know that’s just SO much more important than me knowing what the hell happened in my city in the last 24 hours (sorry about the run-on sentence)!
