Nonsense, 1opinion. FoxNews is a documented right-wing mouthpiece, whose CEO has ordered “spin” on the news against Democrats and the Left and ordered people to keep silent on issues that might have hurt someone he liked (due to, y’know, legal problems!), but which claims to be “Fair and Balanced.” This is demonstrably untrue. If they called themselves the GOP Network, that would be one thing, but they push one view and claim all others are dishonest. That is more dishonest.
And the average news show in the US is moderate - not liberal, unless you are to the right of Attila the Hun. It’s a myth that the whole media are left-wing; reporters average more liberal, but the shows and newspapers are not, because owners and publishers average far more conservative, and they can call the shots.
Oh, and check out the “Pants on Fire” section of Politifact.com.

O’Reilly: http://politifact.com/personalities/bill-oreilly/
I think the problem is that the NEWS, became the news business and like every business it now does whatever makes it a profit. I think it was CBS News was the first to start cutting staff because the news division was losing money.
harley, then why are Beck and O’Reilly on FoxNews? False advertising! Fox has repeatedly shown commercials for their news claiming the best, “unbiased” news, showing both Beck and O’Reilly.
Dan Rather, incidentally, was driven off the air for reporting too soon on a true story (meaning Bush’s shameful dodging of his obligatory military service), but what he was doing was minor league at best compared to the astonishing cr@p aired on Fox every day. Beck claiming Soros is a Nazi? C’mon!
MSNBC had 1.5 liberal opinion people – both labeled as opinion. One is gone. And?
By the way, Rachel Maddow has a few “Pants on Fire” ratings, too, as long as I’m proving fairness.
landshark; true. Plus since there are many more channels now than there used to be for the same number of viewers, Each fiercely compete for ratings.
They have to build themselves a clientele that won’t watch other news.. ie, pich a specifuc sector of the politica spectrum and tell them what they want to hear.
Controversy, not truth, get people’s attention.
And they don’t want truth, they want people’s attention, therefore, money.
^^ the reason CBC/Radio-Canada can work in Canada but the US fails prey to sensationalism, IMHO, is the omniprecense of fear in american culture. We have gone through the Cold War, too but for us, those days are behind us. That conflict ended last century. To get an idea of our both our cultures are different, just look at our idea of freedom, a major concept in politics and any nation’s identity. Talk to an american about freedom, he’ll talk about how it was earned through the war of independence and WW2. If it’s a rightie, he’ll say how the World’s biggest army has the mission to spread it around the World and if he’s especially delusionnal, he’ll say spreading freedom is a divine mission.
Talk to a canadian about freedom, on the other hand, and he’ll think about the great outdoors, vast, wild spaces and the freedom of wild animals for at least a split second.
You can see a good example of that on coins. American coins have something related to the American revolution on all of them (not that it’s bad, it was a great moment in World history). Canadian coins all have a picture of a live and wild animal on it. Only exceptions are the penny (maple leaf, but still something nature-related) and the dime, which has a picture of a boat (the Bluenose).
But flip them and you have the face of the queen of another country!
The Almighty Cerberus says;
^^Call yourself after a critter from Hell if you will, puppy, but don’t ever preten I’m your dad, okay? My hellish self is just as fixed as my other self!
Le Frog hits it on the head. Americans are always terrified and in a state of alarm. Real “freedom” is in the untrammeled outdoors and recognizing the “natural” order of things, without fear. “Americans” have used technology to mow down everything that stood in their way, and made themselves slaves to devices. If left to their own devices, they either die stranded in a stuck car by the side of the road, or drown if nobody tells them to swim. Wilderness, and the animals that live there, represent a world where one can breath freely. The real savages and dangerous predators live in tall buildings and follow trails of asphalt and concrete.

I often hear conservatives asking the question, “If FOX News is so terrible, then why do they draw higher ratings than any other cable news channel?”
The answer is very simple, fiction always outsells nonfiction.

^Tch, silly me, and all this time I thought News networks were supposed to report the NEWS, not give people what they want, truthful or no.
Thanks for clearing that up
And….in your opinion, there are multitudes of moderate and liberal news networks. In my opinion, not so.

Fire marshall will insist on different coloring to avoid confusion, if they have a real fire alarm in comic Fox land.

Sensation sells (see Hearst, William Randolph). And nothing is more sensational than the constant threat of some kind of disaster.

When the alarm is always in the pulled position, why bother?
