That’s “CQ” (“sécu,” from the French word sécurité; it meant a message to all stations ) and “D” (“distress”)—it became official in 1904. In 1906 they officially changed to SOS, though CQD was used before 1904 and well after 1906. The things that I never knew before today!

That’s eerily prophetic. It was two years before the Titanic sank.
