We did this with our kids. We told them to go to bed. They did not have to go to sleep, but they had to stay in bed and do some quiet activity. Most of the time they were asleep within 15 minutes. If you can get kids to pull it out of afterburner, then they do shut down.
Right out of my youth! Mom would say lights out, and they would go out. The flash light would come out. An hour or so later mom would stick her head in and say “flash off!”
I told my kids that they had to go to bed at certain times but they could stay up as late as they wanted as long as they were reading, didn’t get all cranky in the morning, and kept their grades up. All four of my are still readers.

Reading is more important than an extra 15-20 minutes of sleep.

I remember spending most of one night when I was in high school finishing a book with a flashlight as my light.
