Holly: What are you staring at?
Val: We never thought we'd see you so completely engrossed in a literary classic.
Val: *GASP!* Look! She's reading the OXFORD Edition.
Holly: Please save me from the English majors.
I’ve never understood the concept of teasing someone when they decide to do something good. I guess they’ve never heard, “reward the behavior you want.”
I was thrilled when my daughters read these books and enjoyed them (Both Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights). Two of my favorite books when I was about Holly’s age. Surprised Holly’s not reading it on a nook or kindle though LOL.
I’m not surprised; e-book readers are still expensive, and Val is single with two kids.
But I know the feeling you’re talking about – my 9-year-old daughter used her last Thanksgiving break to read Michael Chabon’s Summerland, all 500 pages of it. Wuthering Heights is still a couple of years away, but …
You’d think a novel with so much romance and death would be more interesting to that girl. Reminds me of a boy I once knew who fell asleep during Star Wars-DURING A BATTLE SCENE!
Great Expectations was one of my favorite books in junior high/ high school, and I got really annoyed when we read it for a high school class and it was an abridged version. They skipped some of my favorite scenes.
We had to read “Romeo and Juliet” in high school. The school board provided a sanitized version; our English teacher made us all buy the unexpurgated edition!

All three are in awe of Holly reading and Holly is annoyed of all three hovering around her being full of pride.
