Val: What's next on your reading list? Holly: "Wuthering Heights." Val: Ooh. By Emily Bronte. A very controversial book. Holly: Why? Val: CRUELTY! PASSION! DEATH! Risky territory for a woman author in the 1800s. Holly: But it looks so BORING. Val: You have to OPEN it.

Not quite as good as “sex” but Holly might yet bite.

I thought Heathcliff (not the cat) died in that one.

Perhaps it needs to be reissued as a graphic novel.

I just did a suggested reading list for all grades…I was surprised at how many are still on there from when I was a kid, and how many that I just looked up as well, WTH are they thinking…

All books are more exciting after you open them. Gotta take the first step to start an adventure, Holly.

Normally you do only one big, old classic per grade. How’s she going to find the time to do the rest of her homework??

Read Vonnegut.

It’s even more boring after you open it… all of the Bronte sisters’ dreck is.

Jane Eyre was way better. No one was happy until Heathcliff died. I argued w/ my teacher and wrote a proof that it was not a tragedy. Although I do like Pat Benatar’s song.

A classic is a classic no matter how much you trash it.

Maybe it would help if Holly’s school had a banned books month, where they would only read books that were blacklisted by other schools for one reason or another.
RinaFarina about 13 years ago
@Derkins: You mean like Black Beauty, which was banned in the South because of its title, but in fact was a children’s book about a horse?
RinaFarina about 13 years ago
Val definitely has a point.

i just re-read, The Chysalids,, and am now reading Catcher in the rye at home and Day of the Triffids at the boyfriends house. I always seems to have more than one book on the go.

Sometimes you not only have to open it, but go through a few pages as well.

I’m glad I didn’t have to read many classics in school (even though I had “college prep” classes) because I truly enjoyed many then and even more now.

Julius Cesear on an Aldis lamp is even better…
