what’s so dangerous about not turning it on when you’re fishing in there.
if you want to overreact , call the plumber and have him dismantle the disposal to retrieve the ring or call the power company and have them shut off the power for the whole house.

It never amazes me how many people think inanimate objects will just turn themselves on. Now, if you have small children or pets, you do need to make sure they aren’t able to reach the switch.
I’ve reached in many times to retrieve small bones and other things out of the disposal when it is turned off. I’ve never injured myself in the process. Use some common sense people!
Our disposal switch is a double switch with the over-the-sink light being the other switch. When only one is on it is obvious the other is off, but when both are either on or off, then it is not so obvious. So when our disposal jammed, I didn’t notice that the light was on, and both switches were flipped the same way! Thankfully I just reached under the sink and pushed the reset button, but I was so startled when the disposal started right up! It scared me to think I’d actually thought of just putting my hand in there and seeing if there was something blocking the works! I’m all for flipping the breaker for the disposal when needing to work on it at all! Pulverized fingers are no joke!

nighthawks, you don’t need to call the power company to turn off your power. Just flip a switch.
